Phuket has a long-term transport plan that includes electric buses and a proposed light-rail corridor between the airport and Chalong, with full light-rail operation targeted for 2031. These projects may improve connectivity over time, but visitors should not plan a current trip as though the completed rail system already exists.

For now, allow generous travel time, especially between the airport, Patong, Phuket Town and southern beaches. Group activities by area, avoid unnecessary cross-island journeys during peak periods and confirm pickup times with transfer providers. Public transport options are improving, but taxis, ride-hailing, buses, private transfers and rental vehicles remain the practical mix in 2026.
